Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” To Be Preserved By National Film Registry

The Library of Congress announced the 25 films on Tuesday that will be among the selections to be preserved in its National Film Registry.

Among the chosen is Spike Lee’s 1992 biography “Malcom X,” which cast Denzel Washington as the Civil Rights leader, as well as a 1959 film dramatization titled “Cry of Jazz” which depicted the origins of jazz, expressed through Black and white actors holding varying points of view.

The National Film Registry began in 1989, with an intent to preserve films with artistic, cultural or historical meaning.

There are over 500 films being preserved by the registry including classics such as “Toy Story,” “Rocky,” and “Shaft.”
